Gerald Turner
Current Mid Atlantic Leather Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2018 – Gerard Turner
1 D. Gerard Turner was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, May 1977. He avidly places himself into whatever he commits, believing his purpose in life is to close the stereotypical gap of judgement and welcome others to tap into accepting themselves as well as others unconditionally breaking stigma developed from lack of understanding or knowledge. In January 2012 Gerard was introduced to ONYX, pledging full brother 2015. He began exploring, building relationships in the Leather Community; never wanting anyone around him to feel as he once saw himself; someone wanting to enjoy the comradery, but only stood in the shadows. He now makes it his goal to always address anyone that is out and about at the bars, appearing as he once did in the shadows. He previously served as the Onyx Mid-Atlantic Secretary for 2016. Over the more recent years Gerard has received awards for ONYX Mid-Atlantic Brother of the Year 2016, ONYX Lion Strength Award 2017, Leather Person of the Year 2017 at Maryland Leather Weekend from C.O.M.M.A.N.D.; He was also pinned as Mama’s Renaissance Man during Code RED in 2017. Philanthropy, his greatest passion; From helping teens Say NO to drugs as a Fourth-Grade student; to working with peers in Junior High School with Project T.A.L.K. (Teens Against Losing Kids), he also visits Senior citizens to keep them in touch with the world as it changes. Gerard has worked in raising over $70,000.00 to help youth fight cancer/leukemia; Annual toy drives with several organizations throughout the LGBTQ+ community combined donating over $200,000.00 in Toys and educational resources over several years, fundraisers supporting taking the homeless off the streets for a night of pampering, also canned food drives, his Annual Holiday Party and Coat Drive and much more. Gerard’s strongest passion comes by giving back and wanting to support others in the fight against HIV and Aids, with the Code Red Fundraising Event, with ONYX Mid-Atlantic. For the past 3 years now, the event has raised nearly 10K giving to Casa Ruby - 2015, Wanda Alston House – 2016, Joseph’s House DC -2017 and HIPS DC in March 2018, shattering the annual goal; the crowd as well as community sponsors have more than doubled. The epic start 2018, Gerard competed MAL Weekend and won the honor of serving the community as Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather, continuing his purpose of closing the gap and bridging the community. Gerard feels the true ability to love unconditionally can be seen by taking time out to get to know him and others in your community. His professional career focuses around working and building relationships with people and major events at the National Institute of Health. In the later part of 2018, he is spearheading planning for a new event called The Arts in Leather, which is sure to be a success in more ways than one. This man is multi-faceted and this is only a small scratch to the surface of his abilities as he continues to embrace all around him, both near and far. |
Andre’ Cyr
Current Mr Leather Ottawa – Canada Been living in Ottawa for 37 years. A math nerd by training and worked for the federal government as a statistician/demographer until retirement a couple years ago.
A very typical Canadian upbringing, on the border of New Brunswick and Maine, the son of a lumberjack and a school teacher. Andre is the 8th out of 10 boys. And yes we did have a family hockey team and yes all the brothers are hairy. There were no girls. Other than the MLO title, Andre has served on the Lambda Foundation for Excellence, a scholarship fund for Gay and Lesbian studies in Canadian universities. He was the founding president of Club mustache, an amateur sports Organization for gay men in Ottawa, and still plays volleyball on the gay competitive team (Yes the oldest player in the league). And he has been a volunteer at many AIDS charities in Ottawa. Andre made national news with his partner in 1992 when they were the first openly gay couple in Ontario to publicly adopt a child together. Although gay couples had not been recognized legally then, the ruling set precedents that ultimately change the province’s family laws and the federal laws afterwards. Andre and his partner we’re media contact persons for Eagle in Canada and spoke to Senate committees that led to recognizing same-sex couples and gay marriages in Canada. |

Giant, aka Jacques Daniels
Current IMLB Winner Jacques Daniels can be found most weekends at the Dallas Eagle, his home bar, spending time with friends and catching up after the work week. Look up, he’s 6’8” out of boot. If he cannot be found, he is probably sitting down and has blended in. Also known as Giant, he often escapes the crowd for the boot black stand further elevating his viewpoint at the Eagle and enjoying some quiet conservation with the bootblack.
Giant moved to Dallas in 2015 after finishing his degree in Architecture specializing in Historic Preservation. His academic interests transferred easily into an appreciation for queer and leather history and culture, focusing more on the why in addition to the who and when. He grew up in a conservative small town West Texas and found Dallas’ liberal LGBTQA+ community overwhelming at first. Addressing his culture shock head on, he joined the Dallas Bears through which he found the Dallas Eagle and the leather community. As he’s grown as a Leatherman, he has found a family in his Sir, boyfriends, pups and extended circle of friends who he relies on and cherishes. He is a Team Friendly DFW Advocate and serves as secretary to the Lone Star Boys of Leather. During his title, he has focused on listening and absorbing different views and stories within the Leather Community. He feels that it is the responsibility of leaders in the community to support underrepresented voices with their platform. Away from the bar and having safely stowed his title regalia, he enjoys visiting museums and antique stores with friends, restoring furniture and collecting vintage queer erotica. His home is always open to friends and he enjoys sharing his knowledge and hobbies with others whether at home, at the bar or in the dungeon. His immediate goals include a series of essays on queer and leather culture, highlighting specific moments and topics; completing his licensing exams to be a practicing architect; and to utilize his studio as something more than a storage space. |
